I’m Madeline Nguyen, an award-winning investigative reporter who specializes in transforming code and numbers into compelling multimedia stories that uncover hidden disparities and drive change in local communities. My work has uncovered millions of dollars in unused funds for homeless students, sparked a consumer petition against the grocery giant Kroger and brought awareness to the negative effects of unpaid internships. Currently, I'm working on investigations with the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at Arizona State University.
I see data reporting as part of the next generation of storytelling: reporting that goes beyond mere words on a page to be a visually, aurally and digitally immersive experience for readers. In my reporting on disparities — ranging from gaps in health care access to migration — I value data reporting and visualizations as key tools to evoke empathy in readers, to help them see across differences into everyone's universal humanity. If you can see an issue, then you can feel it.
With experience as an investigative and data reporter on local and national investigations, I’m skilled in Python, HTML, Figma, the Adobe Suite, Flourish, JavaScript and QGIS. My stories have won me numerous honors and awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing, to name a few.
